Vagonplatzes – Germany, 1999 Vagonplatzes also referred to as gypsy camps by some individuals, are mobile wagons situated in vacant lots or hidden in grassy urban areas throughout both within and outside of dense city centers. Found throughout Europe, this project focuses specifically on three camps in particular located in Berlin, Dresden and Hamburg, Germany. Clustered together, Vagonplatzes are self-sustaining communities which often include communal wagons for bathing, cooking, work stations or just congregating. The vary in size, shapes, colors and are constructed to meet the basic needs of home including small wood burning stoves to stay warm with during winter months. Threatened by urban sprawl in the mid-late 90’s many camps faced impeding evictions to make room for new luxery housing. In these instances, the residents would pack up their belongings, hook their vagons up to tractors and pull them off them land in search of a new space to occupy.
